Question: How can I make my wife laugh? After 20 years of marriage, we are very happy, but I want to make her laugh like I did when we first met. Can you give me some tricks and advice?
Answers:
Mr. Know: Humor is the hardest thing to do. Everyone thinks you're born being funny, but it's a state of mind. I can tell you personally because I've written seven comedy films and never thought I could do it. You can be funny if you WANT to. You have to acquire a state of mind.
Start watching funny people. Study David Letterman, Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, and Jon Stewart. Watch "Liar Liar", "Ace Venture", "Old School" and "Saturday Night Live." On
second thought, "Saturday Night Live" isn't that funny.
Remember, everyone is funny, they just don't believe they're funny. There are all kinds of humor - verbal, situational and physical. Adapt your personality to what comes to you naturally. You can see all types of humor combined in Jim Carey. He's a genius. You'll find what your best at through trial and error. When trying to be funny, don't be self-conscious. If you truly want to be funny, you have to be a student of the art. It's a beautiful art. Some people come up with humor quicker than others.
For heaven sake, you're trying to impress your wife, not do stand
up. There are books that can teach you. Good Luck and be funny.
Ms. Mystery:
After 20 years of marriage, what makes you think you have to be funny
for your wife? Obviously you are doing a lot of things right, whether
you're funny or not. I see you want to make her laugh... that proves
right there that you love her deeply. I'd go with Mr. Know's advice
then. Especially about watching Craig Ferguson.
